SANDUSKY

(UPDATED) A Cedar Point building that houses a restaurant and game storage area caught fire early Friday morning, prompting Sandusky firefighters to call in additional manpower to handle the blaze.

A Cedar Point security officer noticed the blaze at about 12:30 a.m.

Cedar Point’s firefighters went to the scene, but the park’s dispatcher quickly asked Sandusky fire to help fight the blaze.

The building, which houses Johnny Rockets restaurant and a game warehouse, is located on the east side of the midway near the park’s entrance.

Sandusky firefighters arrived and immediately called in additional crews from other shifts, a Sandusky fire dispatcher said. All told, about 15 Sandusky firefighters fought the fire.

At about 1:20 a.m. police scanner traffic indicated firefighters had knocked down the brunt of the blaze, but some flames and smoke still lingered.

At least three fire trucks and one ladder truck responded, as well as one ambulance. Sandusky fire didn’t call any other fire departments to provide mututal aid.

Cedar Point spokesman Robin Innes, who arrived at the park at about 1:30 a.m., said no one was injured and the building was empty when the fire started.

The park had also cleared of guests by 11 p.m., so the fire had no impact on visitors.

The fire itself wasn’t large, Innes said, and the flames were limited mostly to the warehouse area. Johnny Rockets sustained some water and smoke damage.

“Everybody’s safe, no injuries,” Innes said. “Tomorrow it’ll be business as usual.”

The park still plans to open at 9 a.m. Friday for early-entry guests and 10 a.m. for the general public.

***(UPDATE)***

Sandusky fire officials say the fire was likely ignighted by a fluorescent sign in a hallway of the building. The blaze is currently being considered accidental.

Is Cedar Point still America’s Roller Coast?

From the Sandusky Register

A Six Flags park in California is the new roller coaster champion, but Cedar Point officials say the rival park wears a tarnished crown.

Cedar Point says the park’s Superman: Escape from Krypton ride isn’t a roller coaster, and it shouldn’t be counted as such.

The Sandusky Register interviewed three roller coaster buffs, all of whom disagree with Cedar Point — they say Escape from Krypton is a legitimate roller coaster.

Last month Six Flags Magic Mountain in Los Angeles announced that with the opening of its newest ride, Green Lantern: First Flight, the park now has 18 roller coasters.

That surpasses Cedar Point’s 17.

But Cedar Point spokesman Robin Innes says Six Flags is stretching the definition of “roller coaster” when it includes Superman: Escape from Krypton.

According to the ride’s official website, Escape from Krypton blasts riders along an L-shaped track that extends 415 feet into the air, giving them 6.5 seconds of weightlessness and plummeting them back to earth in a free fall.

It describes the ride as a “dual-track coaster.”

But the ride resembles Cedar Point’s Power Tower, Innes said, which lifts riders straight into the air.
Cedar Point does not include Power Tower among its official list of 17 coasters.

Escape from Krypton also resembles Demon Drop, a former Cedar Point ride. Referring to Six Flags’ Escape from Krypton, Innes said, “We would call it a free-fall ride.”

Innes also said the quality of Cedar Point’s coasters is second to none.
Six Flags, meanwhile, isn’t jumping into the fray.

A spokeswoman for Six Flags Magic Mountain, Sue Carpenter, did not return phone messages a Register reporter left Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Still, roller coaster enthusiasts and people unaffiliated with the theme parks say it’s reasonable to classify Superman: Escape from Krypton as a roller coaster.

Dinosaurs to roam at Cedar Point? Websites say so

From the Sandusky Register

SANDUSKY

Will the screams of roller coaster riders at Cedar Point soon mingle with the roars of gigantic dinosaurs?

Multiple websites that closely follow the happenings at Cedar Point are claiming the “Dinosaurs Alive!” animatronic dinosaur park show at Kings Island, another Cedar Fair property, will come to Cedar Point in 2012.

The Point Online — thepointol.com — wrote July 20 that Cedar Fair will shut down Paddlewheel Excursions next year and replace it with the dinosaur show.

The dinosaur extravaganza would be built on Millennium Force Island and a permanent bridge would be built, making it impossible to continue Paddlewheel Excursions, according to the website.

Screamscape.com, which covers amusement parks, also mentioned the Paddlewheel Excursions rumor.

The dinosaur park rumor has also been mentioned in discussion forums at pointbuzz.com.

Cedar Point has not announced what its new attraction will be in 2012. In fact, park officials haven’t even pegged down the official announcement date.

Robin Innes, Cedar Point’s spokesman, said Friday an announcement is planned before the season ends Oct. 30.

Innes wouldn’t comment about the dinosaur report, or on claims Cedar Point will add a new, smaller roller coaster in 2013.

“We won’t provide any information about our plans until we make our final announcement,” he said.
