Cedar Point Hosts REVOLUTION3 Triathlon

Cedar Point Press Release

On Sunday, Sept, 12, Cedar Point will host the first-ever REVOLUTION3 Triathlon.

The REVOLUTION3 Triathlon will consist of two events: a full distance (140.6-mile) triathlon and a half-distance (70.3-mile) triathlon. It will be the first time Cedar Point has hosted a triathlon and the first time a triathlon has ever been held in Sandusky and Erie County, Ohio.

More than 1,100 participants are expected to compete. There will be more than 350 people competing in the full triathlon while almost 800 participants have entered the half-triathlon.

The REVLUTION3 Triathlon will be the final leg of a three-race competition. Other triathlons in the series include the Knoxville Olympic (May) and Quassy Half-Marathon at Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury, Conn (June). Both races were held earlier this summer.

The full triathlon course (140.6 miles) consists of:
-Swimming 2.4 miles off the Cedar Point Beach;
-Biking 112 miles to and from Cedar Point along the rural roadways of Erie County; and
-Running 26.2 miles from Cedar Point to downtown Sandusky and back to Cedar Point (twice).

The half triathlon course (70.3 miles) consists of:
-Swimming 1.2 miles off the Cedar Point Beach;
-Biking 56 miles to and from Cedar Point along the rural roadways of Erie County; and
-Running 13.1 miles from Cedar Point to downtown Sandusky and back to Cedar Point.

Both races will start and end at Cedar Point. The swimming course begins and finishes on the Cedar Point Beach. At the end of the running course, the finish line is near the Extreme Sports Stadium on the Cedar Point midway.

Although contestants in the REVOLUTION3 Triathlon are coming from across the country, many of the competitors are from Ohio and the Great Lakes region. Members of several running clubs in western Ohio are expected to participate. Each has a story to tell.

Pastor John C. Adams is new to triathlons. At 56, he did not even enter his first 5K until May of last year. He also had a fear of water. But Pastor John fully embraced the challenge.

Since May, he has already competed in his first two triathlons. The first, the Rev3 in Knoxville, Tenn., was the first time he swam in open water.

Besides working as a full-time pastor for the New Life Church in Sandusky, Adams is also the Chaplain for the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and the National Director for the Multisport Ministries chaplaincy program.

Adams is only one of the many participants who has an interesting story to tell. There are many others.

More than 1,100 participants have already entered the race. The competitors will vary in age, background and experience. The field will also consist of several professional athletes.

On Sunday, Sept. 12, the schedule for the race will be:
-Full Rev Pro Swim: 6:50 a.m.
-Full Rev Swim: 7:05 a.m.
-Half Rev Swim: 8:30 a.m.

The Full Rev Swim will begin on the Cedar Point Beach near the Sandcastle Suites Hotel. The Half-Rev Swim will begin near the Soak City waterpark. Both swimming events will end on the Cedar Point Beach near the Hotel Breakers.

The finish line for both events will be near the Extreme Sports Stadium on the Cedar Point midway. The first finishers are expected to complete the course shortly after noon. The finish line will remain open until midnight.

Budweiser Clydesdales to Visit Cedar Point on Sunday, Aug. 29

Cedar Point Press Release

SANDUSKY, Ohio—Cedar Point guests will have the opportunity to see the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales on Sunday, Aug. 29 when the eight-horse team will visit the Sandusky, Ohio, amusement park/resort.

This will be the third consecutive year the Clydesdales have appeared at Cedar Point.

Highlighting the day will be a parade along the park’s Main Midway beginning at 2 p.m.  The Clydesdale will travel along the midway from the Sky Ride to the front of the park before ending at the Wicked Twister roller coaster.  The Clydesdales will also be on display near the Wicked Twister from 1:30-2 p.m. and 2:30-3 p.m.  During this time, guests will be able to see the eight-horse team harnessed for the parade and placed into position.

These beautiful horses stand six feet tall at the shoulder and weigh between 1,800-2,300 pounds! The horses wear horseshoes that are more than 20 inches long and weigh approximately five pounds.  Each day, the Clydesdales consume 20-25 quarts of whole grains, vitamins and minerals as well as 50-60 pounds of hay and 30 gallons of water.

A dalmatian rides on the coach next to the driver as part of a tradition of being a companion to the horses.

Clydesdales are a powerful breed of draft horses, originating in the Clyde Valley of Scotland. They are known for the distinctive feathery hair on the lower parts of their legs above and behind the hooves.

In 1933, August A. Busch Jr. and Adophus Busch III gave a six-horse hitch of champion Clydesdales to their father to commemorate the repeal of Prohibition.  They now serve as mascots for the Budweiser brand and make frequent appearances at special events around the country.

Cedar Point will be open daily through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6.  Operating hours will vary.  The park will reopen on Sunday, Sept. 12 and will be the headquarters for the Revolution3 Triathlon.   The park will also host HalloWeekends 14 on Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays, Sept. 17 through Oct. 31.

Cedar Point to Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Millennium Force

Cedar Point Press Release

SANDUSKY, Ohio – In 2000, fears and concerns about Y2K were running rampant across the world.  Closer to home, then Vice President Al Gore and George W. Bush, the governor of Texas, were campaigning for the presidency of the United States.  How the Grinch Stole Christmas was the year’s top grossing movie, and Beverly Hills 90210 aired its final episode.

In May of that year, Cedar Point made history.  The Sandusky, Ohio, amusement park/resort had just introduced the Millennium Force roller coaster.  Standing 310 feet tall and reaching speeds of 93 mph, it was the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world!

Now 10 years and more than 17 million rides later, Cedar Point will commemorate this legendary coaster by hosting the Millennium Force 10th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 21.  Some of the special festivities on that day will include a 10th anniversary ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. and contests for Millennium Force prizes.

One of these contests will be for guests who follow Cedar Point on Twitter and the park’s in-park mobile messaging program.  During the day, several messages will be posted instructing guests on how to win an awesome Cedar Point and Millennium Force prize package.

“From Day One, Millennium Force was an instant hit,” said John Hildebrandt, Cedar Point’s vice president and general manager.  “It is an international icon for Cedar Point and symbolizes the best in roller-coaster-riding.”

Designed and manufactured by Intamin AG of Wollerau, Switzerland, Millennium Force is one of the most popular roller coasters ever built and has repeatedly been selected as the best coaster in the world in polls throughout the decade.

This steel giant towering over Sandusky Bay on Lake Erie was the first roller coaster in history to surpass the 300-foot threshold and to exceed 90 mph.  With a track length of 6,595 feet, Millennium Force is still the longest steel roller coaster in North America.

At a cost of $25 million, Millennium Force is one of the most expensive ride projects in the history of Cedar Point.
